Curcumin COMPLEX is a plant-based capsule formula containing 3 powerful herbal extracts: patented BCM-95® (CURCUGREEN®) Turmeric (95% Curcuminoid Complex, with a minimum of 86% total Curcuminoids, of which at least 65% is Curcumin), Ginger (5% Gingerols) and Black Pepper (95% Piperine). With these highly pure raw materials and high standardizations, we have developed one of the most powerful anti-inflammatory products on the market. This product is designed for athletes as well as for all types of active or inactive individuals. It is suitable for vegans and contains no allergens.
Key Benefits of Turmeric
-
Anti-inflammatory: Its main action is to act as a powerful natural anti-inflammatory. Its identified mechanisms of action include reducing pro-inflammatory cytokines such as Interleukins 1 and 6 (IL-1 and IL-6) and Tumor Necrosis Factor alpha (TNF-α). In sports, this appears to reduce the intensity of post-exercise muscle soreness, commonly known as DOMS (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness), and may therefore support recovery (Rosińska-Lewandoska, D. et al., JEHS. 2.024 and Liu, X. et al., PO. 2.024). For this same reason, it may also provide joint protection. In general, it has analgesic effects and is therefore used as a natural alternative to NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), both due to its anti-inflammatory and analgesic action, meaning that it may serve as an alternative treatment for various chronic inflammatory conditions (arthritis, gastrointestinal disorders, cancer, psoriasis, etc.).
-
Antioxidant effect: Helps protect cells against oxidative damage by, on the one hand, helping to eliminate ROS (Reactive Oxygen Species) (Nanavati, K. et al., EJN. 2.022) and, on the other hand, enhancing the activity of our body's own antioxidant enzymes (Alam, M.S. et al., P. 2.024).
-
Immunomodulatory effect: Helps maintain normal immune function. For example, in patients with autoimmune diseases, it helps reduce systemic inflammation (Alam, M.S. et al., P. 2.024).
-
Effect on neurodegenerative disorders: Such as Alzheimer's disease (Yang, F. et al., JBC. 2.005). Curcumin can cross the blood-brain barrier in small but biologically active amounts, where it mitigates neuroinflammation by suppressing the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines, as previously mentioned, which are often elevated in response to injury and the accumulation of amyloid plaques (Fernández-Lázaro, D. et al., N. 2.020). It is worth noting that curcumin supplementation has also been associated with an improvement in mood in people with major depressive disorder (Alam, M.S. et al., P. 2.024), highlighting its potential neuroprotective and psychotropic properties.
Key Benefits of Ginger
-
Anti-inflammatory: As a plant belonging to the same family as turmeric, many of its properties are similar, meaning that it also has significant anti-inflammatory activity. For this reason, in athletes it may reduce the pain associated with DOMS, thereby improving recovery. This analgesic and anti-inflammatory effect appears to occur cumulatively, so continued use is recommended both in the days before and after a competition or during periods of the season with peaks of intense training (Christopher Black, D. et al., TJOP. 2.010).
-
Antioxidant effect and immune support: Being rich in antioxidants and bioactive compounds, it helps modulate systemic inflammation and oxidative stress generated by intense exercise. Daily ginger intake may also contribute to better immune function and, consequently, reduce the risk of illness, which is particularly important for athletes, especially during the winter season.
-
Gastrointestinal benefits: In prolonged endurance sports (triathlon, ultramarathon, etc.), some runners commonly experience gastrointestinal discomfort or nausea during competitions. In these cases, small doses of ginger may help settle the stomach (Nguyen Hoang Anh et al., N. 2.020).
Key Benefits of Black Pepper
- It is mainly added because it improves the absorption of certain bioactive compounds that naturally have low bioavailability, such as curcumin. This is mainly because it inhibits their hepatic metabolism and slows their breakdown in the digestive tract, which may increase their systemic absorption by up to 2,000% (Rosińska-Lewandoska, D. et al., JEHS. 2.024).
- Adding an active compound such as piperine may enhance and maintain the positive effects of curcumin.
Why use the combination of these three extracts?
Because they act synergistically, enhancing the individual effects of each one. In fact, some studies have shown that consumption of these 3 herbal extracts compared with drugs such as naproxen (an NSAID) improves PGE2 (Prostaglandin E2) levels in patients with chronic osteoarthritis in a similar way to the aforementioned drug (Heidari-Beni, M. et al., PR. 2.020). It has been shown that incorporating ginger into a mixture of turmeric and piperine further promotes vasodilation and enhances anti-inflammatory effects (Hegde, M. et al., AO. 2.023).
Conclusions
Available scientific evidence suggests that oral curcumin supplementation could have a positive influence on both health and physical performance in athletes and/or physically active individuals. Curcumin appears to be safe and potentially beneficial in the context of sport and exercise, mainly due to its ability to reduce inflammation and oxidative stress, alleviate pain and muscle damage, and therefore improve muscle recovery and support both physiological and psychological responses to training. These effects could contribute to improved sports performance and overall adaptability to training.
Recommended for all types of people, especially those with a chronic inflammatory condition who seek to improve their health, as far as possible, by minimizing medication intake and therefore its potential side effects.
Ingredients
Dry turmeric extract BCM-95® (Curcuma longa L., root), concentrated ginger extract (Zingiber officinale Rosc., root), hydroxypropyl methylcellulose capsule, corn starch, dry black pepper extract (Piper nigrum L., fruit), anti-caking agent: magnesium salts of fatty acids.
Directions for use
Take one capsule per day or as prescribed by your doctor or nutritionist. To improve absorption and avoid possible gastric discomfort, preferably take it with a meal containing fat (oil, nuts, avocado, etc.).
Professional Advice
-
Acute supplementation protocol (4–5 days) for periods of high training load and/or competition: to optimize recovery processes, take one dose before and, above all, another dose after the training session or competition. This protocol should begin 1 to 2 days before the specific session or competition and continue for the following 2 or 3 days.
-
Long-term or chronic supplementation protocol (4–12 weeks): this intake protocol could amplify the benefits against muscle damage and therefore promote better recovery. Take one dose per day with breakfast or dinner.
-
Mixed supplementation protocol: consists of maintaining a chronic protocol and, during periods of maximum training load or competition, reinforcing it with an acute protocol, i.e. increasing the dose and changing the timing of intake.
Warnings and/or Contraindications
Turmeric
Consult your doctor, specialist or nutritionist if you are diabetic, as turmeric may lower blood sugar levels, which should be taken into account if you take diabetes medication such as metformin or insulin. It could cause hypoglycemia.
Ginger
Consult your doctor, specialist or nutritionist if you take anticoagulant medication such as Warfarin or antiplatelet medication such as acenocoumarol (Sintrom), acetylsalicylic acid (Aspirin, Adiro, etc.), as it may increase the risk of hemorrhage, bleeding, etc.
Black Pepper
As previously mentioned, it improves the absorption of various bioactive compounds, including certain medications, so consult your doctor, specialist or nutritionist as it may enhance the effects of antibiotics (ciprofloxacin, etc.), analgesics (ibuprofen, diclofenac, etc.) and antihypertensive drugs (amlodipine, etc.). It may also be dangerous for people taking medications that are metabolized in the liver, such as statins, increasing the risk of liver toxicity.
